Peer Mentoring is a proven, student-led programme already being used in thousands of primary, secondary and special schools throughout the UK. Sustainable and effective, it can be used to support transition, attainment, attendance and behaviour and help address issues of bullying.
Over coming months, as part of the National Peer Mentoring Anti Bullying Pilot being run by the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation (MBF), more than 6,000 Peer Mentors will be recruited to work with fellow students, helping them to understand the impact of their actions and words on others and encouraging them to become active citizens in the school community.
Pilot schools hit the headlines - in the Media Centre!
From 2006-2008, the MBF was contracted by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to establish a high-quality, formal and sustainable peer mentoring scheme in 180 schools in England that could be evaluated to assess the impact on pupils and schools. The independent evaluation, carried out by the University of Canterbury, is available here.
A four-part series concentrating on peer mentoring in education has been jointly developed by Teachers TV and the MBF. The schools taking part in the programmes have been part of the national pilot study into peer mentoring, which began two years ago.
The programmes are available on the Teachers TV website. They can also be viewed on Sky Guide 880, Virgin TV 240, Tiscali TV 845 and Freeview 88 (4-5pm).
